How To Unzip Your Downloads
&
Import Patterns Into Your Designer Software

Thank you for your order of our download patterns for the CompuCarve™ and CarveWright™ advanced woodworking machines. We hope you will enjoy creating beautiful projects with them!

Here are some brief instructions for activating (unzipping) and importing the pattern files into your CarveWright Designer software...

Pattern files you purchased and downloaded for adding to your pattern library are 'zipped' (compressed) so that download times are minimal and because some internet servers will not accept the file extension 'ptn' for the CompuCarve pattern files. Therefore, pattern files are required to be 'zipped' to assure downloads will proceed as normal for any email server. This is consistent with industry standard computer file transfer procedures since 1986.

You must 'unzip' the files after you download them, so that the .ptn files become available (you cannot, and should not, attempt to directly open 'zipped' files). Most computers already come with an unzip utility that allows you to do this (right-click the zipped file filename and it will most likely automatically show the option to "extract here" to unzip your file). If you can't find the utility on your computer, no problem. The video link (below) gives you instructions on where to obtain a free unzip utility from the internet.

Once the files are unzipped, you simply import them into your Favorites Library as normal. To use a .ptn file, you must use the "Pattern Import" feature in the Designer program before the .ptn file can be recognized by the software.

NOTE: Pattern Import is NOT the same as the Image Import under the File Menu! Do not attempt to import a pattern as an image via the File Menu - that won't work. The patterns are in the regular .ptn format specifically for your CompuCarve/CarveWright Designer software and can only be used after being imported properly.

If you are not already familiar with how to import a pattern file, it's easy!
Here are the steps...

1) Open Designer, start a new project, then open the Pattern List window (by simply clicking on the blue-colored Shell icon, or by selecting View/Toolbars/Pattern List)

2) Right-click the word "Favorites" and click the word "New" if you want to create a new category (Example: "Leaves"). Type in the name of your new category and press your 'enter' key on your computer keyboard.

3) After you create your category, then right-click on the category title (Example: Leaves) and then click the word "Import". A file window will open up.

4) Navigate to the directory where your .ptn file is located (i.e., wherever you unzipped your files), and click on the name of the pattern you want to import into your selected category.

5) Click the word "Open" and the pattern will be imported instantly. It happens so quickly that you might not realize it did anything at all, but it did!

6) Repeat this for any other patterns you want to import

Once the pattern(s) are imported, they can be dragged onto the Designer "board" and positioned, resized, etc. to layout your design.

Also, Jon Jantz has a great free video tutorial you can watch that shows how to unzip files and demonstates the import pattern procedure steps as outlined above. Here is the link:

*Special note to Mac users - Cntrl-Click (hold down the control key as you click) is the equivalent to PC right-clicking. (This functionality has been in place since OS 8.5 and higher.) You can also purchase a Mac mouse that has a true right-click function - it's called the Mighty Mouse made by Apple.
