  Painting and Finishing Tips
1. Opaque Acrylic Painting Markers make it super-easy to paint lettering and other details on your carvings. We use "Hunt" brand (purchased from Wal-Mart) but paint markers are available in several brands from a variety of stores. Here is a link to a webstore that carries a large selection of painting markers:

2. Quick-n-easy faux "alabaster" finish on wood...
Wood: just plain ol' 3/4" pine or any wood of your choice
Finish Technique: Brush-paint wood with Kilz Latex Primer, then spray paint with Rust-Oleum Shell White "Paint for Plastic" (great on wood too!), then brush on a very light coat of MinWax Puritan Pine wood stain, then wipe off the stain until satisfied with "the look". NOTE: Allow paint to dry between each step.

3. "Fuzzie" removal... If you own a Dremel tool, use the miniature 3M Radial Bristle Discs "for jewelry" to safely remove fuzzies from your carvings, without loss of detail. Stack multiple discs (3 to 6 or more) on the mandrel (3/32" dia. part # 4494A44) to suit the task at hand - http://www.mcmaster.com sells the discs online for about 88 cents each (search their site for "radial bristle discs"). We use McMaster part # 4494A19 (80 grit), part #4494A18 (220 grit) and #4494A17 (400 grit) discs.

4. Homemade "fuzzie" removal discs...make your own discs for your Dremel (mounted on a 1/8" screw-top mandrel that normally comes with your Dremel) from ScotchBrite abrasive pads by punching out circles from the pads with a 3/4" ID capped metal pipe and a hammer! We use these homemade discs for initial "rough removal" of fuzzies, then finish off with the 3M discs as noted above. Cheap and effective!
